POSITION SUMMARY:
Virginia Wesleyan University invites applications for the Athletic Communications Graduate Intern position to begin August 2025. The Graduate Intern will assist the Director of Athletic Communications with the promotion and publicity of Virginia Wesleyan University’s 24 NCAA Division III intercollegiate varsity sports.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Athletic Communications Graduate Intern’s responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting with all game day operations; writing, editing, and disseminating press releases, game notes, and stories; producing athletics publications, managing the athletic department social media pages and producing other digital media content; updating the athletics website (www.vwuathletics.com); compiling, maintaining, and distributing statistics; and operating computer systems including Adobe Creative Suite, Presto, and NCAA Live stats. Some travel may be required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's Degree in journalism, public relations, communications, sport management, or a related field. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; organizational and time management skills are also key. Ability to establish close working relationships with department administrators and coaches. Proficiency with social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook. Represents Virginia Wesleyan University with the highest standard.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience in a Sports Information/Athletic Communications office and experience with and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, NCAA Live Stats, and Stat Crew/Presto.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The University will cover the cost of your graduate tuition, working 25 hours on average per week paid at an hourly rate.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Sports Information/Athletic Communications requires attendance at most home athletic events, both indoors and outdoors; nights and weekends are required; office work will also be involved.
