Position Overview:
Southwestern University has an immediate opening for a Career Planning and Development Coordinator. Sr. Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Associate Director of Athletic Communications plays a key role in overseeing all aspects of athletic communications for Pirate Athletics. This position is responsible for coordinating sports information coverage for all athletic events, serving as the primary media contact, and maintaining historical and statistical data. The Associate Director creates and distributes content that promotes student-athletes, coaches, and staff, enhancing their recognition on regional and national levels. Additionally, this role manages student workers, assists with digital content creation, and participates in campus events and committees to increase the visibility and engagement of Pirate Athletics. This is a full-time exempt position eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.
Essential Duties:
Sports Information
Manage game-day logistics and administrative tasks for sports information across Football, Men’s & Women’s Soccer, Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse, and Men’s & Women’s Tennis programs.
Assist with game stats, live stats, and webcasting for assigned sports.
Write game notes and press releases for each contest, award, community service event, and other related activities.
Release relevant athletic information to local and national news outlets.
Handle media requests, interviews, news conferences, and photo sessions.
Gather and submit required statistical data and information to the SCAC, SAA, and NCAA.
Coordinate nominations for honors and awards for student-athletes and coaches.
Maintain historical records, statistics, and photographs, and other important department information.
Manage the recruitment, training, and scheduling of student workers to assist with sports information duties.
Marketing & Communications
Collaborate with the Associate Director of Athletic Marketing & Digital Media to assist with digital content development for Pirate Athletics digital media (southwesternpirates.com, email, and social media).
Identify and write engaging feature stories to highlight and promote student-athletes, coaches, staff, and Pirate Athletics on both regional and national levels.
Write content for marketing and communication materials, including media guides, video scripts, and more.
Additional Duties
Attend and/or assist with select events throughout the year.
Serve on campus committees as requested.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree Communications, Journalism, Sports Management or related field.
Experience in athletic communications or a related field.
Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
Excellent written communication skills.
Knowledge of Southwestern University and NCAA guidelines regarding publications and promotions.
Extensive experience with StatCrew or similar statistics software.
Basic knowledge of HTML and web content management systems (specifically Sidearm Sports).
Basic photography and photo editing skills.
Ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities, and produce a reliable work product.
Ability to attend work consistently and have flexible work hours based on the athletic competition schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two or more years of sports communications experience, including one or more years of experience in a university or professional sports setting.
Master’s degree from an accredited university.
Starting annual salary: $51,968. The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed the starting salary.
