Canisius University, a Jesuit college in Buffalo, N.Y., invites applications for the position of Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant. This is a 10-month position that can be renewed for a second year. Canisius sponsors 20 NCAA Division I athletic teams, which compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), with the exception of ice hockey, which competes in the Atlantic Hockey Association.
The successful candidate will possess a strong work ethic, enthusiasm and the long-term goal of working in the athletic communications/media relations profession. The athletic communications graduate assistant will contribute to the school’s athletic department web site (GoGriffs.com) and social media platforms while serving as the primary contact for assigned sports and assisting with other sports such as men’s and women’s basketball and hockey. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: ensuring GoGriffs.com and all assigned sports digital/social platforms are up-to-date in a timely manner for fans and media, writing and editing press releases, postgame recaps and game notes, coordinating interview schedules for coaches and student-athletes, keeping and updating season statistics and historical records, assisting with the production of promotional content and other duties as assigned by the director of athletic communications.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and have work experience in a related field. The position requires strong writing and organizational skills, in addition to experience using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, NCAA Live Stats, Stat Crew and all social media platforms. This position requires extensive hours, including nights, weekends and some holidays.
The successful candidate agrees to abide and comply with constitution, bylaws and interpretations of the University, the NCAA and the MAAC. This 10-month position (tentatively scheduled to start on or around Aug. 7, 2023) will offer a bi-weekly stipend and class waivers for graduate education at Canisius University.
